“There were no talks, just consultations. We gave them a letter with the Maidan’s requirements and they took it to Yanukovych because he is the only person who takes decisions in this country,” Lutsenko said.
According to Vitaliy Kovalchuk, representative of UDAR at the talks with government representatives, representatives of the Maidan “expressed the Maidan’s requirements to the president through the governing group and highlighted the urgent need for the opposition leaders to meet with Yanukovych in order to take actual steps to seek solution to the deep crisis in the country.”
Earlier, Yanukukovych’s Advisor Hanna Herman said that negotiations to solve the political crisis in Ukraine had already begun.
UDAR’s MP Valeriy Patskan reported earlier that representatives of the opposition had departed to consultations with the working group created by the President to seek a solution to the crisis. He mentioned Batkivshchyna’s MP Oleksandr Turchynov, Svoboda’s Ruslan Koshulynskyi, UDAR’s Vitaliy Kovalchuk and ex-Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko among those representing the opposition at the negotiations.
Meanwhile, clashes continue between Berkut, the riot police, and protesters at Hrushevskoho Street leading to the government premises. The clashes began yesterday.
UDAR leader Vitaliy Klitschko called on Ukrainians to come to Maidan because “the government has declared a war to the people of Ukraine”.
Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka described the clashes as a crime against the state and called on opposition leaders to take their supporters away from Hrushevskoho Street.
The police have launched criminal cases upon charges of mass riots under Art. 294 of the Criminal Code. Maximum punishment is up to 15 years in prison.
