US Democrats and Republicans submitted a resolution to the Senate calling for “peaceful and democratic conclusion” to the Ukrainian crisis that would allow Ukraine to become an active member of the European community.
If passed by the Senate, the sanctions including visa restrictions and asset freezing for officials involved in violence against protesters should be considered by the US Congress.
The resolution also notes that further violence ordered by the government will “have consequences for our bilateral relationship,” the resolution sponsors said in their statement, Reuters reports.
"Ukrainians are protesting in the streets today because they know they're being sold out by their government for short-term monetary gain from Russia, and they rightly fear the long-term economic cost to Ukraine's economy," supporters of the resolution said in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.
According to Reuters, U.S. Senators John McCain, a leading Republican voice on foreign policy issues, and Chris Murphy, the Democratic chairman of the Senate's Europe subcommittee, will visit the Ukrainian capital on Sunday, the day the Ukrainian opposition plans a mass rally, aides said.

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union, said earlier that the EU was not considering sanctions against Ukrainian officials.
