The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Kerry was expected "to reiterate that the United States is open" to imposing sanctions on Ukraine, a threat President Barack Obama's administration first made more than two months ago.
Kerry has also said the US is discussing the possibility of sanctions on Ukraine with the EU to try and create "conditions for compromise".
As Brussels correspondent of Rikard Jozwiak reported in his Twitter, EU sanctions on Ukraine can come into force this Friday. European ambassadors were talking about asset freezes, visa bans, arms embargo. However, he said that ambassadors were likely not to include Yanukovych and his family into the list. They want to save him for the next stage.
Earlier today president of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said that EU had “made it clear that the EU will respond to any deterioration on the ground”.
Earlier it was reported that Belgium, Lithuania and Poland support EU individual sanctions against some Ukrainians.
