Ukrainian political prisoner Shumkov returned to Ukraine

Ukrainian political prisoner Oleksandr Shumkov, who was illegally imprisoned in correctional colony No. 4 in Tver region (Russia), crossed the Russian-Ukrainian border. Ukrainian Ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova announced this on her Telegram channel.

"It is now official: Ukrainian political prisoner and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Shumkov is free," Denisova wrote.

Denisova said that Shumkov was released from the colony on December 23, and then he stayed in Tver Center For Temporary Detention Of Foreign Nationals.

On the evening of December 24, a Ukrainian crossed the border through the Bachevsk checkpoint. His relatives, the representatives of the Ombudsman's Office and the territorial bodies of the military administration of the Armed Forces of Ukraine came to meet him.

Today Shumkov will go to Kherson to the military unit, where he served before the detention, the Ombudsman added.

On December 4, 2018, Russian court sentenced Oleksandr Shumkov, former security guard of the ex-leader of the Right Sector Dmytro Yarosh to 4 years in a general regime colony for allegedly "organizing extremist activities."

Ukraine's Ombudsman earlier reported that Shumkov was tortured in Russian colony.
