“Antigovernment protests in Ukraine sparked back to life on Sunday as tens of thousands gathered in central Kiev, fueled by the beating by riot police of demonstrators including former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, now a protest leader,” The WSJ says.
Numbers had dwindled over the Christmas and New Year holidays at protests against President Viktor Yanukovych's rejection of an integration pact with the European Union in favor of a deal with Russia. But demonstrators on Sunday flooded Kiev's main square, known as the Maidan, where hundreds of activists have been camped for several weeks behind makeshift barricades.
“The spike in numbers at the protest showed the resilience of a movement with broad aims, including the ouster of Mr. Yanukovych and the punishment of police and officials allegedly involved in crackdowns on protests, which began Nov. 21.,” The WSJ reports.
